Oklahoma native James Marsden is trading playing romantic leads and starring in fierce film dramas to run wild with Bear Grylls.

Marsden, who was born in Stillwater, joins Kate Hudson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Winslet, Drew Brees, Ed Helms and Michelle Rodriguez who put their lives in the hands of adventurer and television host Bear Grylls on NBC’s summer series “Running Wild With Bear Grylls.”

Each of the celebrities will spend 48 hours with Grylls on an adventure they reportedly won’t forget.

British Columbia-based Bron Studios has embarked on its first animated feature, Henchmen, a super-hero tale utilizing the voices of James Marsden, Thomas Middleditch, Rosario Dawson, Alfred Molina, Nathan Fillion, Jane Krakowski, Rob Riggle, Craig Robinson and Will Sasso.

Currently in production at the company’s studios in Burnaby and Duncan, B.C., the film is being written and directed by Adam Wood, animation director on Escape From Planet Earth and Space Chimps. A Bron Studios production in association with CW Media Finance, it is being produced by Bron Studios’ Aaron L. Gilbert and Luke Carroll and executive produced by Jason Cloth of CW Media Finance and Bron’s Brenda Gilbert. WME Global is handling sales of the film outside Canada. eOne Canada will distribute the picture in Canada

Middleditch plays a blue-collar worker named Lester who joins the Union of Evil, which is full of super-villains with evil schemes. Marsden plays a fallen hero who must step up to save Lester and his team.

Founded by Aaron L. Gilbert and Brenda Gilbert in 2010, Bron recently sold the Hank Williams drama I Saw the Light, starring Hiddleston, to Sony Pictures Classics and also is now producing the Ricky Gervais project Special Correspondents with Netflix.

The actor talks to TIME about his new movie and co-star Jack Black

You’ve never seen a dysfunctional bromance quite like the one at the heart of The D Train, now in theaters. James Marsden stars as Oliver, a struggling actor and one-time high school hot shot lured back to his 20-year reunion by a former classmate (Jack Black) who’s still desperate to be cool after all these years. When a bacchanalian weekend in L.A. and Oliver’s homecoming don’t quite go according to plan, The D Train explores a side of male friendship not often seen on the big screen. “I thought it was one of the more subversive comedies I’ve read in a while,” Marsden says.

TIME caught up with the actor to talk about his high school days, awkward fan encounters and reuniting with Jack Black.
